The Wallabies put in a ruthless performance at Villa Park in Birmingham as they crushed Uruguay 65-3 in their second Pool A match. Australia ran in 11 tries past their hapless opponents to register a bonus point victory.

Seven minutes is all that it took Australia to break the deadlock when Sean McMahon made good on a turnover lineout to drive the ball over and open the try scoring.

Just two minutes later came the second when Joseph Tomane crossed over for the score. Uruguay’s sole points of the match came on 24 minutes when Felipe Berchesi converted a penalty for the South Americans.

Not only were the Aussies better in all aspects, they were better in terms of weight as well, where they enjoyed a massive 104 kg advantage over their opponents in the pack.

The only blip of the first half came when Quade Cooper was shown the yellow card and was sent to the sin bin after a high tackle on Agustin Ormaechea, but that didn’t slow the Wallabies down as they went on to score three more tries in the period, from Dean Mumm, Henry Speight and Ben McCalman.

In the second half, Australia seemed to pick up from where they left off as Drew Mitchell scored two quick tries within five minutes of the restart. With the second of those tries, Mitchell overtook Chris Latham as Australia’s leading try-scorer at the Rugby World Cup, with 12 now to his name. Jonah Lomu of New Zealand still holds the all-time record with 15.

Uruguay were just unable to get out of their own half as the Aussies kept them pinned in.

McCalman and McMahon added their second tries of the evening soon after and Matt Toomua and Tevita Kuridrani rounded off the scoring on the night as they crossed over for tries number 10 and 11.

The message was an ominous one to their next opponents, hosts England, who they play at Twickenham this coming Saturday. England of course are in a must-win situation after having lost out to Wales yesterday making their qualification from the ‘Pool of Death’ that much more tricky.
