Rugby League Referee Chris Leatherbarrow dies aged 27

Leatherbarrow worked his way up from amateur and semi-professional Rugby

The tributes are pouring in for Super League official Chris Leatherbarrow who has passed away at the age of 27. The circumstances of his death are unknown at this time. Leatherbarrow has had to his career a number of matches officiated on amateur and professional levels, BBC reports.

His home-town Rugby side commonly known as the “Saints” have also released an official statement in lieu of the unfortunate incident.

"Saints are saddened and shocked to hear of the passing away of Chris Leatherbarrow. Chris was well known to the club having refereed our matches and been an integral part of the match officials team. He is also from St Helens. Our sincerest and heartfelt sympathies are sent to all Chris' family and friends. Once again, this is time for the Rugby League family to come together and not only pay tribute but be strong for everyone. We have no doubt it will."

Among the sporting community who have expressed their sorrows, is RFL cheif Nigel Wood.

"We are all truly shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Leatherbarrow's untimely death. This is a dreadful tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with Chris's family, friends and colleagues."

Among the non-sporting community, actor Anthony Cotton said.

“Shocked and saddened to hear the news about Chris Leatherbarrow. Any of you lads struggling out there please don't suffer alone” (referring to CALM, a suicide prevention campaign)

Some of his RFL counterparts also paid homage. Robert Higgs was quoted saying the following.

“Gone too early my friend. Thinking of friends, family & especially your princess Daisy. RIP Chris Leatherbarrow your fun and smile will be missed."

Tim Roby, another official in the RFL said "Rest in peace, my old friend and colleague Chris Leatherbarrow. Very fond memories from that Lanzarote camp. My sincere condolences."

Leatherbarrow's sister Rebecca Leatherbarrow wrote on her Facebook, “Fly high brother bear,Your big blue eyes and heart of gold I love you always your soul is goldFly high in the sky and I'll be with you soon and care for you sleep tight my world where thinking about you xxxxxxxxx"

The other teams from the Championships to offer their condolences include Whitehaven, Leigh, Keighley and Rochdale, who all released official statements.

Chris Leatherbarrow was from Dentons Green, St Helens and he is survived by his wife and daughter.
