With the growing trend of a fitness-oriented lifestyles within our Indian population, it is only logical that there has been a steady increase in the domestic breed of runners in our country as well. With running events such as marathon races popping up in cities here and there across the vast expanse of our massive country, the Indian running calendar is starting to look densely populated now; just like our nation!

What’s interesting is that running enthusiasts are exploring all forms of running. While events such as the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon have established themselves as the marquee events in our annual calendar, other race forms including ultra-marathons and obstacle runs are beginning to create their own well-defined niche within the overall structure with their respective strong and extremely passionate community of followers.

At this point, I am really intrigued by the latter form of running, i.e. obstacle running, which seems to provide a host of challenges designed to test the physical and psychological character of participants under gruelling circumstances. While distance running generally requires exceptional amounts of lower body strength, obstacle running on the other hand poses hurdles that require a perfect combination of a fit and strong torso combined with a healthy lower body as well. Add to this the mental challenge of figuring out the smartest and the safest way to overcome an obstacle and the whole exercise acquires an enthralling raw appeal.

Crawling through muddy trenches underneath the barbed wire, climbing tortuous nets and scaling high walls are just among the simpler obstacles that the runners have to encounter. As always, the kick that one gets from overcoming such tough and rugged challenges, be it at such races or even in the race of life, is extremely satisfying and fulfilling!

This is exactly the reason why I have decided to participate in the Devils Circuit this year. Devils Circuit, India’s first and biggest obstacle run, promises to knock the daring participants out of their comfort zones through excruciating challenges to test the mind as well as the body. I hope the organizers at Devils Circuit 2014 are listening and hard at work to prepare a course challenging enough to bring out the best from all participants. And I also hope they keep the chilled beer ready for me when I cross the finish line after beating the devil himself!

For all those who are reading this, I have just one message: guys, come out for this experience of a lifetime! Let’s beat the devil together on 9th March this year at Gurgaon!
