2015 Cricket World Cup: Bangladesh vs Scotland - Stats of the match

Bangladesh gave their chances of making it to the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Cup a massive boost on Thursday after tracking down a stiff target of 319 set by Scotland at the Saxton Oval in Nelson with 6 wickets in hand and 11 balls to spare.Opener Tamim Iqbal scored a vital 95 and in partnership with Mahmudullah, who made a run-a-ball 62, laid the foundation for the chase. Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rehman then provided the final touches as the Mashrafe Mortaza-led side cantered home to a win.Earlier in the day, Scotland’s Kyle Coetzer set the stadium alight with a 134-ball 156 that propelled his side to a huge score of 318 for 8 in 50 overs. Here are the best stats of the match:

#1 Highest Individual score by a Associate batsman

Scotland opener Kyle Coetzer’s magnificent innings of 156 in 134 balls against Bangladesh is the highest individual score by a player from an associate nation in World Cup history. It is also the first 150+ made by an associate player in the World Cup and the third overall. The other two cricketers to have done so are Calum MacLeod and Paul Stirling.

The magnificent innings by the right-hander propelled his side to 318 for 8 in 50 overs, which is the second highest team total by an associate nation in the history of the World Cup. Ireland lead the chart, courtesy of the 329 for 7 that they chased against England in Bangalore during the 2011 edition of the tournament.

#2 Highest individual score in a losing cause in World Cups

Coetzer’s score of 156 is also the highest individual score in a losing cause in World Cup history. The previous highest was by former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who made a score of 143 from 141 balls against New Zealand in a losing cause during the 2003 edition of the tournament.

South Africa lost that game by nine wickets, courtesy the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method after New Zealand were set a revised target of 226 runs in 39 overs. Led by the then Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming’s unbeaten innings of 134, the Kiwis cantered home with 9 wickets in hand and 11 balls to spare.

#3 Highest chase in Bangladesh\'s ODI history

Led by a 139-run stand between Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah and an unbeaten 41-ball 52 by Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh made 322 for 4 in 48.1 overs to claim their second win of this World Cup. This is now the highest successful run chase in their ODI history, eclipsing the 313 for 6 that they made against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2009.

Interestingly, in both those games, two players from the opposition, slammed 150+ scores. Coetzer scored 156 today while Zimbabwean batsman Charles Coventry scored an unbeaten 194 off 156 balls in that game.

#4 Second highest run chase in World Cups

Bangladesh’s total of 322 for 4 is also the second highest successful run chase in the history of the World Cup. Ireland’s total of 329 for 7 against England in the 2011 World Cup tops the list of the highest successful run chases across the 11 editions of the mega event.

It is also the second highest team score made by Bangladesh in their ODI history, falling four short of the 326 for 3 that they made against Pakistan in the Asia Cup last year. Shakib Al Hasan played the knock that provided the impetus even then, scoring a 16-ball 44 not out with 6 fours and 2 sixes.

#5 Bangladesh\'s highest individual World Cup score

Tamim Iqbal’s innings of 95 runs off 100 balls that helped set up the chase for his side is now Bangladesh’s highest individual score in a World Cup game. The 25-year-old surpassed former teammate Mohammad Ashraful’s 87 against South Africa at the Providence Stadium in Guyana during the 2007 edition of the tournament.

That innings by Ashraful helped his side register a total of 251 for 8 in 50 overs, after which the bowlers came to the party and helped them register a famous 87-run win over the Proteas.

This is also only the second instance in Bangladesh’s ODI history when four of their batsmen have scored 50 or more runs in a single innings.
