5 Bowlers from the domestic circuit India can try out in the near future

The Indian team of the 2000s had a strong lineup that could win matches with just their batting might. However, there were also match winning bowlers in the form of Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan and Irfan Pathan, who formed a potent bowling attack. There have been numerous instances where bowlers have burst onto the International scene with some stellar performances in the domestic circuit, but couldn’t replicate the same success at the highest level, and faded away. The new Indian bowling unit looks promising, with the likes of Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav providing the ideal mix of swing and pace, as well as a reliable spin attack comprising of Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Here is a list of five bowlers that are doing well in domestic matches, and might be tried by the Indian selectors in the near future:

#1 Shardul Thakur

Though short in stature, Thakur has handled the mantle of leading the Mumbai’s bowling attack with great success. He finished the last Ranji trophy season with 48 wickets, standing second in the list of highest wicket-takers.

Criticized for being overweight, he shed 12 kg between seasons to end up with 27 wickets in six matches, ending up as the second highest wicket taker for Mumbai.

Selected for South Africa’s tour match against India, he rattled the top order, taking four wickets. Trained at the MRF Pace academy under the guidance of Glenn McGrath, Thakur can also be quite handy with the bat. Having a potential only a few others can match up to, he can fill the role of a fast-bowling all-rounder in the current Indian team.

#2 Shreyas Gopal

22-year old Shreyas Gopal gained recognition in Karnataka’s junior levels with stellar performances with the bat. Apart from his batting, his leg spin abilities have come to the fore, with him having taken lose to 90 first class wickets in 27 matches.

He played a pivotal role in Karnataka’s triumph in the Ranji trophy last season, taking twenty seven wickets in just six matches. With 554 runs, the all-rounder was also the leading run getter for his team. The leg spinner was roped in by the Mumbai Indians for the 2014 edition of the IPL, where he got to play under the guidance of Anil Kumble.

In the second innings of the Irani Cup 2014, he skittled the Rest of India team for 183, capturing five wickets in less than ten overs, capturing Karnataka’s only eighth first class hat-trick ever.

#3 Kuldeep Yadav

The 20-year old from Kanpur trades in the rare Chinaman genre. He started off as a fast bowler, but his coach suggested he take up the unorthodox art. He first got recognition in UAE in 2014, when he became the first bowler to take a hattrick in the ICC Under-19 World Cup, which was his second Under-19 World Cup.

Bought by KKR from MI, Yadav made waves during the 2014 Champions League. He was the second highest wicket taker for KKR after Sunil Narine, with six wickets in five matches. In October 2014, he was selected for the Indian team to play the subsequently scrapped series against West Indies, without having played first class cricket before.

#4 Rush Kalaria

The left-arm seamer from Gujarat was the leading wicket taker for Gujarat in the previous Ranji trophy season, taking 33 wickets at an average of 17. With a faltering campaign, Gujarat would pin hopes on the 22 year old to help them achieve crucial points in the coming days. He has operated at an economy of less than 2.5 in 23 first class matches, with 5 five wicket hauls.

He relies more on swing than pace, and has worked closely with Zaheer Khan in improving his speed. Called “Rush Hour” by his friends, he has also been part of India’s U-19 team. He also has two first class centuries to his credit.

#5 Rishi Dhawan

Dhawan has been performing consistently well in the domestic circuit for the past few seasons, being on the fringes for an Indian team call-up. Yet, the Indian cap still eludes the 25-year old, who hails from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

He is a fast bowling all-rounder, who was the highest wicket taker in the 2013 Ranji Trophy, with 48 wickets. He started his IPL career with Kings XI, before moving to the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 edition. He was bought for a whopping 3 crores by the KXIP in the seventh season.

He is also very handy with the bat, with more than 2000 runs and four hundreds to his credit.
