Brazil vs Poland (1938) (6-5)

Poland was considered as a minnow and it wasnt a surprise to see that they eventually lost to Brazil. But then why does this match stands out as one of the most riveting matches ever in a World Cup is because that no one would have ever thought that a minnow who were playing their first World Cup match would come within an earshot of winning it.

As expected Brazil were leading 3-1 in the first match. The second half saw Polish legend score two goals to make it 3 all. Though Brazil took the lead in the 71st minute, Wilimowski just scored a minute before the full time to complete his hat-trick which meant the match go into extra time.

Brazil made sure that they seal the issue for final when Leonidas scored two goals. Wilimowski tried hard by scoring his 4th goal in the 118th minute but couldnt prevent his team from losing what otherwise was a fantastic display of football by Poland.

Hungary was a formidable team and West Germany was just finding their feet. Hungary made sure that they showed their class as a team when they pumped in 8 goals to win the match comfortably. Though it was a surprise to see a second string West Germany managing to score three goals since the loss would have meant Germany facing a relatively easier team next time, it was a clear indication of what would happen in near future. The two met again in the finals only to see West Germany taking revenge of the humiliating defeat in the most important match of their lives.

Hungary vs El Salvador (1982) (10-1)

It was a mismatch of sorts. One of the most formidable team in Europe was up against El- Salvador who were considerd minnows and they were no match as the scoreline shows. Hungary found the back of the net ten times. In response El Salvador could score one which was just a face saving goal.
