Top 5 Premier League signings who flopped

Onkar

The Premier League saw a lot of high profile signings this season. Let us look at five signings who turned out to be flops. These players were decided on the basis of their fee and how much their performance affected their clubs.

#1 Eric Lamela

Tottenham Hotspur signed Lamela for a record fee believed to be around 30 million pounds in August. Lamela was considered to be one of the most talented players in Europe with a variety of clubs interested in signing him.

Lamela has had a horrendous season by his standards. He was unable to secure his place in the first team squad and got injured at the start of the new year. Overall he managed to start only three games and came on as a substitute on six occasions in the league. He managed a solitary assist against Cardiff in the league.

Spurs were considered to be title challengers by many given their signings at the start of the season. However they could not even manage to put up a fight for the Champions League spot.

#2 Marouane Fellaini

Marouane Fellaini was David Moyes’s first major signing of the season. He was signed for around 27.5 million pounds. Fellaini did not manage to set the stage on fire with his arrival and was unlucky to get injured for around 3 months.

He managed a single assist in his 16 appearances in the Premier League and started only 12 games in the League.

Many fans considered him to be a mediocre signing and he has made only a single appearance after Ryan Giggs took over.

#3 Roberto Soldado

Tottenham Hotspur signed Roberto Soldado for a fee of 26 million pounds from Valencia. Soldado had managed to score 24 goals in his previous season and was at the peak of his career when he joined Tottenham.

Soldado had a difficult start to the season adjusting to the pace of the premier league. He also suffered a personal tragedy during the course of the season when his wife had a miscarriage and lost their baby.

He started twenty two games during the season and made six substitute appearances in the league. He scored six times and managed to assist five goals.

He did not find himself in the starting lineup after Tim Sherwood took over. The biggest concern for most fans was the lack of goals from open play from Soldado as many of his goals were from set plays.

#4 Ricky van Wolfswinkel

Norwich signed Ricky van Wolfswinkel for a record fee of 8.5 million pounds from Sporting Lisbon. Having scored 15 goals in his previous season, a lot was expected from him. However he had a disappointing season and could not help Norwich in the battle for survival.

He managed to start sixteen games and came on a substitute on nine ocassions. He only managed to score a single goal which came in his debut game against Everton and contribute another assist throughout the season.

For a record signing his record was dismal throughout the season and Norwich would have been better off signing a player who could have scored more goals in the season which could have helped them to safety.

#5 Iago Aspas

Liverpool signed Iago Aspas early in the summer for a fee believed to be around 7.7 million pounds from Celta Vigo. Aspas had a great season with Celta Vigo where he had scored 12 goals and assisted 7 in La Liga and helped them survive in the league.

After joining Liverpool Aspas made a great start in pre-season. However he found it difficult to adjust to the pace of the Premier League. He was often left on the bench and Brendan Rodgers did not use him very frequently. He only managed 5 starts in the Premier League and 9 appeances as a subsitute. He did not manage to score a single goal and was able to assist one goal.

There were times in the season when Liverpool would have loved to have fresh pair of legs to rest Sturridge and Suarez during the season, but Aspas simply was not good enough.
