Rating Arsenal's summer signings after half a season

Chambers has to step up his game with the signing of Gabriel Paulista

Arsene Wenger made 5 additions to his squad in the summer, after finishing fourth in the Premier League last season and winning the FA Cup. After a lot of speculation, Arsenal completed big money signing of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, Calum Chambers from Southampton, Danny Welbeck from Manchester United,Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United and David Ospina from OGC Nice.We take a look at their performances in the first half of the season.

#5 Calum Chambers - 5/10

Chambers has to step up his game with the signing of Gabriel Paulista

Calum Chambers made a £16 million move to Arsenal from Southampton, but he has done little to justify his price tag. The young defender has shown glimpses of his potential and has been used in a couple of positions by Arsene Wenger.

Chambers started his Arsenal career playing as a centre-back and earned a national team call up. The 20-year-old was also nominated for European Golden Boy award. Recently, Wenger admitted that the young defender has played too much football for a player of his age. Chambers will surely need to perform better, if he hopes to cement his place in the starting XI and new signing Gabriel Paulista will be extra competition for a starting berth.

#4 Mathieu Debuchy - 6/10

Debuchy is currently injured with a dislocated shoulder

Another right-back Arsenal signed in the summer transfer window was Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United in a £12 million deal. Along with Alexis Sanchez and Calum Chambers, the France international also made his debut for the Gunners against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Debuchy was sent off against Besiktas in the Champions League play-offs. Few days later, he damaged his ankle ligaments that kept him out for three months. The 29-year-old has not featured much for the Gunners, but he scored a crucial goal against Liverpool at Anfield in a 2-2 draw. He then dislocated his shoulder against Stoke City in a 3-0 win at the Emirates.

#3 Danny Welbeck - 6/10

Danny Welbeck is another player who started his career at the Emirates strongly, but since then has failed to make his mark. The England international made a £16 million from Manchester United. He has just scored 7 goals in 22 appearances for the Gunners.

The 24-year-old first goal for the Gunners came against Aston Villa in 3-0 win and then went on to score a hat-trick against Galatasaray in a 4-1 at the Emirates. He has just scored 3 goals in his last 15 appearances and has failed to make an impact. With the return of the likes of Giroud and Walcott from injury, Welbeck will need to step up his performances if he wants to flourish at the Emirates.

#2 David Ospina - 6/10

Ospina has only played five times for the Gunners.

After a promising World Cup, David Ospina signed for Arsenal in a £3 million deal from OGC Nice. The Colombian international was the first choice goalkeeper for his country in the World Cup and conceded the fewest number of goals of the tournament till the qualifiers in Brazil.

Though the 26-year-old has found his playing time limited, due to Arsene Wenger preferring Wojciech Szczsny. Ospina has just featured five times for the Gunners, starting four of them and has kept two clean sheets. He will be hoping to start more games, after Wojciech Szczsny's recent poor performances. Ospina has started three games for the Gunners this month, including their win against Manchester City at the Etihad.

#1 Alexis Sanchez - 9/10

After a brilliant World Cup campaign, Alexis Sanchez had offers from Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal, but the Chilean star snubbed Liverpool to join Arsenal in a £35 million deal from Barcelona. The 26-year-old has scored 17 goals in 26 appearances for the London outfit. He made his debut against Manchester City in the Community Shield game which Arsenal won 3-0.

Sanchez scored his first goal for the Gunners against Besiktas to earn them a spot in the Champions League group stages. He then didn't seem to stop scoring as he scored in back to back games against Leicester and Manchester City. Since then the Chilean international has produced several match winning performances and will hold the key if Arsenal want to finish in the top 4 this season. We are no one to judge him if Arsenal legend Thierry Henry thinks he is best signing the Gunners have made in the past six years.
