8th Maharashtra Paralympic Swimming Championship

Paralympic Swimming Association of Maharashtra is hosting the 8th State level Paralympic Swimming Championship for swimmers from all over Maharashtra on 2nd October, 2013 at Andheri Sports Complex.

This will also serve as a selection trial for the National Water Polo & Swimming Championship, which is going to be held in Bengaluru from 9th November to 12th November, 2013. The selection trial is only meant for the Locomotion Impaired and visually impaired swimmers.

This event is open for all age groups. Grouping will be based on age, sex and type of disability. For the purpose of providing an equal opportunity to compete and a fair chance to win, the swimmers shall be classified into seven disability classes, i. e., S1 to S5 – Locomotion Impaired, S11 –Visually Impaired and SD – Down Syndrome. In case of borderline disorders or for swimmers who can not be clearly classified according to the below given criteria, the medical committee shall use its discretion keeping in view that no injustice/disadvantage is done to any swimmer. The disability classification is based on International Paralympic Swimming Guidelines.

PSAM (formally known as The Swimming Association of Maharashtra for Disabled) has been formed in 2004 to encourage the development of Olympic spirit among physically challenged sportspersonalities. PSAM is affiliated to Paralympic Swimming Federation of India and Maharashtra state Paralympic Association which is a recognized national level apex institution affiliated to Paralympic Committee of India which is recognized apex institution for Para sports by the ministry of Sports and Youth affairs, Government of India.

PSAM has successfully conducted State Championship every year since 2005 and National Championship three times so far. The association’s core team constitutes of Paralympic swimmers themselves who have won many national & international medals. PSAM is making effort to improve the standard of Para Swimming amongst the physically challenged sports persons to bring the swimming event on a national as well as international standard.

In 2012, National Swimming Championship which was held in Chennai, the Maharashtra team won 24 Golds, 14 Silvers, 18 Bronze medals and 6 Individual Championship in various category. And with that count, they where the first runners-up in the 12th National Paralympic Championship.

PSAM has produced many International Para Swimmers from different districts of Maharashtra. Few names are Suyash Jadhav (Solapur), Chetan Raut & Kanchanmala Pande (Amravati), Hansraj Patil (Nashik), Swapnil Patil (Kolhapur) and Kanchan Chaudhary (Jalgaon).
