Andy Murray storms into Miami Open semi-finals

Andy Murray overcame a sluggish start to book a semi-final berth in the Miami Open.

After registering his 500th win on Wednesday, World Number 3 Andy Murray overcame a sluggish start to defeat Austrian Dominic Thiem 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open.

The debacle in the opening set notwithstanding, Murray was ruthless as he closed out the match with a resounding 6-1 win in the final set.

Speaking to SkySports later on, Murray said – “I was getting myself into breakpoint positions and it is a fine line between going for winners and trying to finish the point and making your opponent play.

"Being a good match player is understanding when to go for your shots and when to back off a little bit.”

In his first outing against 21-year old Thiem, who is ranked 36, Murray was in danger of letting the match slip with the former displaying determination and grit much beyond his years and experience. But the Scot, refusing to wilt under pressure, bounced back, giving little away as he closed out the second set 6-4, before eventually dismantling Thiem in the final set.

Murray will meet the winner of the quarter-final between Czech’s Tomas Berdych and Argentina’s Juan Monaco.
