Marcos Baghdatis sets up a second round match with David Ferrer in Nottingham

Marcos Baghdatis plays a backhand in his win over Victor Estrella Burgos

Marcos Baghdatis made it to the second round of the Nottingham Open after Victor Estrella Burgos retired trailing 5-7, 0-3 in the first round.

Both players got only 58% of their first serves in for the match. However, the Cypriot converted three break point opportunities in the 15 games played before Burgos had to retire with a neck injury.

Baghdatis will take on top seed David Ferrer in the second round and was confident of upstaging the Spaniard.

"It gives me another challenge, another day of hard work.

"When you win one or two matches like that, you start to click and feel much better going forwards.

"I'll talk a bit with my coach and just find a way to win. It's going to be interesting, Baghdatis said.

In other first round matches, Alexandr Dolgopolov, who beat Rafael Nadal at Queen’s, got the better of American Donald Young 6-4, 6-4.

Marcel Granollers also won after Vasek Pospisil retired at the end of two sets with a back problem.
