Nick Kyrgios courts controversy in Wimbledon loss, accused of tanking

Nick Kyrgios is not a stranger to controversies. The Australian appeared to have given up midway in his match against Richard Gasquet in the fourth round.

Kyrgios recieved a warning for swearing during the second set by chair umpire James Keothavong. He lost a game later by hitting a deliberate weak return and not attempting a return in the next point. He lost the second set 6-1, but fought back to win the third set in a tie-breaker.

The crowd gathered on court 2 weren’t impressed one bit by the antics of Kyrgios.

The 20-year-old is in danger of facing a fine by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

The ITF rules state: “A player shall use his best efforts to win a match when competing in a grand slam tournament. Violation of this section shall subject a player to a fine up to $20,000 [£12,860] for each violation.”

This was not all. Kyrgios had an argument with the chair umpire during a changeover while changing socks.

“I’m staying on the court. If you’re going to get angry with me that, that’s another level. I’m changing my socks. You want me to ask him? Richard, I’m just changing my socks. Yeah, he’s fine.”

Kyrgios eventually lost 5-7, 1-6, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (6).
