Wimbledon 2015: Serena Williams overcomes Victoria Azarenka to reach the semifinals

Serena Williams beat Victoria Azarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to progress to the semifinals at Wimbledon.

Azarenka started off on a edgy note as she faced a break point in her opening service game. A wide serve helped her come on board in the first set. Serena held her serve to love in the next game when Azarenka netted her backhand.

Azarenka however broke Serena in the fourth game when Serena netted her backhand on break point. Azarenka held her composure and hit a brilliant forehand down the line winner to take the first set.

Serena won 75 % points on her first serve and was 7 on 7 for net points won. She broke Azarenka’s serve in the sixth and eighth games to level scores at one-set all. Azarenka had three break chances, which she failed to convert.

The World No. 1 led 2-0 in the third set when Azarenka hit her backhand wide on break point. Serena held her next game with an ace and it looked like an uphill task for Azarenka to come back from 0-3 down. Azarenka tried her best to stay in the set, but Serena overpowered her opponent with some powerful groundstrokes.

Azarenka hits a forehand wide on match point to send Serena into yet another semifinal at Wimbledon.

Serena will face Maria Sharapova in the semifinals on Thursday.

Radwanska advances to last four

Agnieszka Radwanska plays a forehand during her win over Madison Keys

In the other quarterfinal on court 1, Agnieszka Radwanska beat Madison Keys 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3.

Radwanska edged a tight first set in a tie-break and won the decider by breaking Keys’ serve late in the set. Keys made a whopping 40 unforced errors, while Radwanska made just 7.

Keys also hit 48 winners, but the experienced Radwanska won crucial points in the match to reach the last four where she will face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.

Muguruza had earlier beaten Timea Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-3.
