Tennis Australia embarrassed by "Hall of Shame" typo

Bernard Tomic at war with Tennis Australia

Tennis Australia recently made a major faux-pas when an email sent by them said that Bernard Tomic was due to play at the upcoming “Hall of ‘Shame’ Tennis Championships” in the United States. The tennis body was immediately forced into issuing an apology after the highly embarrassing typo was discovered. The actual tournament that Tomic is going to feature in is in fact the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, which is an ATP grass court tournament and is held in the American city of Newport.

The blunder was blamed on an error in the organisation’s result services and a corrected email was immediately sent with a statement of apology.

“Tennis Australia sincerely apologises for the typo in the daily results service today,” the statement said. “This has now been corrected and we wish both Bernard Tomic and JP Smith all the best in the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport.”

The bizarre mistake quickly made the rounds on social media and has left Tennis Australia (TA) more embarrased than ever with many discussions on how such a mistake could have even occurred in the first place.

Mistake made at an unfortunate time

The timing of the error too seems rather circumspect, as it comes just a week after Tomic’s tirade against TA’s officials for not respecting him and for not providing him or his sister Sara with appropriate funds, after his third round loss at Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic.

Bernard was also dumped out of the Davis Cup team for his alleged “unacceptable behaviour“, and in an interview given by TA’s Pat Rafter, he suggested that Tomic’s relationship with TA was beyond healing.
