German athlete confirms positive doping test at Sochi Winter Olympics

Berlin, Feb 22 (IANS) German biathlete Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle confirmed media reports that she failed a doping test at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, German media said Friday.

The former Olympic cross-country champion stressed at the same time that she is not aware of any wrongdoing and cannot explain why it has come to a positive test result, Xinhua reported.

German news agencies named Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle as the one in question earlier in the day, but said there was no immediate confirmation from the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB).

The DOSB reportedly said it had been informed by the International Olympic Committee on Thursday evening that an A sample of a doping test on a member of the German team showed an abnormal reading.

A B sample of the test was added and opened Friday, which also showed a positive result, making Sachenbacher-Stehle the first case of doping at the 2014 Games.

Sachenbacher-Stehle, 33, who has won five Olympic medals in cross-country skiing, finished fourth in the 12.5km mass start race Monday. She won a team sprint cross-country gold in Vancouver in 2010 and a cross-country relay gold in Salt Lake City in 2002.
