Commonwealth Games 2014: 4 Silvers and a bronze for India in wrestling

It was a rather disappointing performance in the final by the Indian wrestlers as all the four in contention lost their final bouts and hence had to be satisfied with the silver medals.

So, with three golds and a silver yesterday and four silvers and a bronze today, Indian grapplers have won a total of nine medals up til now in the XX edition of the Commonwealth Games.

Lalita (2nd from left) had to be content with a silver

Lalita faltered in the final

Indian wrestler Lalita, who fought extremely well till the semifinals, was absolutely no match to her Nigerian opponent as Odunayo Adekuoroye pinned down the Indian grappler in just 31 seconds in women’s freestyle 53 kg category.

Lalita's silver was the fifth medal for India from wrestling; South Africa’s Mpho Madi and Canada's Jill Gallays grabbed the bronze medals.

Bajrang (1st on the left) did not put up a fight in the final

Tough luck for Bajrang

2013 Asian and World Championships bronze medalist Bajrang Kumar went down to Canada’s David Trembley 1-12 in the final of men’s 61kg weight category.

Tremble pinned down Bajrang in just one minute and 24 seconds to win the gold medal on the basis of technical superiority.

Indian grapplers’ poor show in the finals continued on the 7th day of the games as Sakshi Malik went down to Aminat Adeniyi of Nigeria 10-0 in the final of women’s 58 kg weight category.

The Nigerian showed exceptional grappling skills as she rolled Sakshi no less than 5 times inside 2 minutes of the first period. Stone of Canada and Ford of New Zealand won the bronze medals.

Satywart Kadian (1st on the left) faltered in the second period and was second best

Fourth Indian defeat in a row

It was a hard-fought battle for Satywart Kadian as he lost to the Canadian wrestler Arjun Gill in the final of 97 kg weight category. Canadian, who was trailing by 0-2 at the end of the first period, came back strongly in the second, scoring 4 points in comparison to two by the Indian .

So, scores were tied at the end of the second period. As per the rules, if the scores are tied, then the wrestler who has made the last move of two points wins. Arjun managed to do that during the closing stages of the match. The Indian was cautioned once for playing very defensively.

Unfortunately, all the points scored by the Indian wrestler were of one point each. England’s Leon Rattigan and Kiwi Sam Belkin won the bronze.

Navjot Kaur (1st on the right) was impressive in her bronze medal victory

Bronze for Navjot Kaur

Navjot Kaur thrashed the Scottish wrestler Sarah Jones 13-0 in the bronze medal play-off in women’s 69kg weight category. Hannah Reuben also won bronze as she beat Refilwe Molongwana 12-2.
