World Cadet Wrestling Championship: Indian wrestlers unable to snatch top spot on day 4 of the event

In the ongoing World Cadet Wrestling Championship 2016 in Tbilisi (Georgia), the fourth day has been full of disappointments for Indian participants as all 5 Indian wrestlers were unable to snatch the top spot.

The day started brightly for Mansi as the Women’s freestyle 40 kg wrestler advanced to the final by winning all the qualifications, quarter-final and semi-final round. The Indian wrestler defeated Maria Leorda (MDA), Calista Rane Espinosa (CAN) and European Champion Maria Alexandra Cioclea (ROU) respectively.

However, the winning run of Mansi was stopped by Tsugumi Sakurai (JPN) in the final round who defeated her 10-0 (TF).

In the Women’s freestyle 46 kg category, Anju defeated Faten Ramadan Shamndy Ahmed (EGY) by fall 11-0 and progressed in the quarterfinal. In the next round, she was defeated by Andreea Beatrice Ana (ROU) by TF 10-0. Anju was defeated in her Bronze medal match by Valentyna Karamavrova (UKR) 4-6.

Anshu, the other Indian female wrestler in the Women’s freestyle 60 kg category was defeated by Mariia Lachugina (RUS) 8-5 and progressed to the Repechage round. The repechage round saw Anshu beat Kornelija Zaicevaite (LTU) in a comfortable 6-1.

Anshu defeated Aina Temirtassova (KAZ) 7-4 in the Bronze medal match in the Women’s freestyle 60 kg category.

However, the other 2 Indian participants were not so much lucky regarding their draws. Kiran from 52 kg category and Karuna from 70 kg category were both eliminated from the round of 16 after being defeated by Sylwia Ismena Martyka (POL) and Merve Mustafa Pul (TUR) respectively.

The Indian female cadet wrestlers have now won all three of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the World Cadet Wrestling Championships 2016.

On the other hand, five more wrestlers hailing from Japan have reached the Finals. Suzuna Yoshimura, the Asian Cadet Champion and Haruna Okuno among the most noticeable figures among them.

In the 60 kg category, newcomer Atena Kodama (JPN) defeated the 2015 European Bronze medal winner Ioana Marinkova (BUL) and European runners-up Elena Sell (GER). In the 70 kg category, Yasuhu Matsuyuki (JPN) will face Asian champion Aiperi Medet Kyzy (KGZ) for the 70 kg final.

She also defeated European champion Anastasia Zimiankova (BLR) in the previous round while the defending World Champion Denise Stroem (SWE) was eliminated after a shock defeat against Medet Kyzy in the semi-finals.
