NBA on TV in India

In Money for nothing, a novel by PG Wodehouse, a character, Chimp Twist, owner of a Health Farm would write letters to newspaper editors about the benefits of people attending his farm. His letters would be in reply to any article appearing in the newspaper, whatever the topic may be, he would find a way to relate it to his Health Farm. For instance, he’d say that the political scenario is troubling but a matter of greater importance is the scenario of public health. Then he’d end the letter by advertising his health farm.

Of late, the comments on the links on NBA India Facebook page were beginning to resemble the trend followed by Twist. Whatever the link may be, people would find a way to bring it around to a topic of greater importance, viz. lack of TV broadcast of NBA games.

Some people hoped that the lack of games on TV meant that a better deal was in the works, and this has proved to be the case. Earlier we’d usually get two games a week, one on ESPN and one on Star Sports, and some other programs. According to the new deal, there will be 4 games a week on TV, in addition to a lot of other programs.

Here is an excerpt from a press release:

NBA ANNOUNCES NEW TELEVISION PARTNERSHIPS RESULTING IN A RECORD NUMBER OF LIVE GAMES AND PRIME-TIME PROGRAMMING IN INDIA’

“Two games per week to be shown on Ten Sports each Thursday and Saturday with replays of each game in prime time. They will also televise the NBA’s marquee events live, including NBA All-Star, the NBA Playoffs, one NBA Conference Finals and The Finals.

NBA highlight recaps as well as features on NBA grassroots events in India will also air on Ten Sports and select Zee Network regional channels throughout the season. In addition, thirty-six episodes of Real NBA, a half-hour weekly reality program that provides viewers with a behind-the-scenes look at the biggest stories from around the league, will air in prime time on Ten Sports, and on some of Zee Network’s leading regional channels in local dialects.

NBA coverage on PIX includes two live games per week on Wednesday and Friday. PIX will have live coverage of the NBA Playoffs and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2011 and the Western Conference Finals in 2012. PIX will also air 36 episodes of NBA Action, a globally renowned highlights show that captures the latest game action and league news, giving fans an inside look at the best players in the NBA.

A new weekly original program, NBA in 30, will also debut on PIX. Each episode of NBA in 30 will showcase a condensed game in thirty minutes.”

This is great news for the fans. Beyond the obvious additions to the programs to be aired, these will be on Ten Sports and PIX, two channels which show a lot of cricket and football. How is that great news you ask? For those stuck with cable operators who have limited slots for sports channels will know what I mean. Usually they show preference to the channels showing live cricket and football matches, and ESPN and Star Sports are the usual suspects to be dropped in favour of other channels. Ten Sports and PIX are usually shown at all times, so now we can look forward to watching the new NBA season on TV.
