ESPN has announced that it will cancel the global X games venture due to financial reasons. The network launched the plans to extend the X games last year which saw new events in Tignes, Foz do Iguacu, Munich and Barcelona. But the events have been excluded from the 2014 schedule leaving only two events in Aspen and Austin remaining in the calendar.
“We are proud to have run world-class competitions for both the athletes and spectators; however the overall economics of these events do not provide a sustainable future path,” said an official ESPN statement.
Though the new events was widely considered successful last year the event the event was reportedly dogged with financial difficulties. According to reports, the decision may be a result of the network’s company-wide job cuts and a major scaling back of its international operations.
