Sam May, a defender for SANFL club West Adelaide Bloods, is in an induced coma following an incident on Sunday, April 21. The Daily Mail reports that May fell from the roof of a pub, sustaining life-changing injuries.

The 24-year-old reportedly fell off a pub roof after a game on Saturday afternoon. The Bloods played against Norwood in the annual Teakle Cup in Port Lincoln a few hours before the incident occurred.

The report also revealed that his teammates were unaware of the incident, as nobody knew he had fallen until they got to the airport for their flight home later in the day.

May was eventually discovered by club officials at the hotel around 9 am and had sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma.

Reacting to the unfortunate event, West Adelaide released a statement through its chief executive that read (via Daily Mail):

"The West Adelaide Football Club can confirm that senior men's player Sam May was involved in an incident in the early hours at Port Lincoln on Sunday morning,
"Our priority is the health and well being of Sam and his family as well as the wider West Adelaide community."

May's family also released a statement. They thanked the club and its supporters for the care given to him. A part of the statement reads: (as quoted by Daily Mail)

"We are truly grateful for the incredible care our beautiful boy received in Port Lincoln (before) being transferred to Adelaide and now in the RAH,
"We are forever grateful that his loyal Westies family and the beautiful Heard family were by his side,
"Sammy is the light of our lives and we absolutely love and adore him as does everyone who is lucky enough to meet him. As awful and as difficult it is, we just need to wait now."

Sam May played in Teakle Cup defeat hours before his accident

Sam May featured in his side's game against Norwood Redlegs hours before falling from the roof of a pub. The Bloods lost 50-37 by the Redlegs in Saturday's Teakle Cup clash.

It was the third edition of the one-day competition, where hosts Norwood took the day, thanks to a 13-point win. The Redlegs won the inaugural 2022 edition but lost last year to the Bloods before Saturday's triumph.

May recorded seven disposals, three marks and three tackles at the Centenary Oval in Port Lincoln.
