Alicia Silverstone Super Bowl commercial: Which movie is this commercial based on?

During the Super Bowl on Sunday, there will be many new commercials starring celebrities. In one of those, Alicia Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher from the Clueless movie.

Silverstone is playing the adorably well-intentioned Valley girl 28 years after the release of Amy Heckerling's cult classic, "Clueless." The movie set the standard for contemporary Jane Austen adaptations and spawned decades of Halloween costumes.

This time, however, Silverstone's appearance won't be for a follow-up movie or one of her TikToks. Rather, it will be for a Rakuten commercial that will run during the Super Bowl.

The opening scene of the commercial's teaser shows students chatting in a classroom. With one shopping bag in each hand, Cher walks down the aisle as the school bell rings and the classic yellow plaid outfit enters the picture. She brings them to the front of the room and places them there before turning to face the camera.

"Don't bother," she commands. "Your gal has returned."

The 30-second commercial will air on Sunday during the Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.

Every year, the Super Bowl draws the largest TV audience, with the NFL estimating that 208 million people watched it last year. With that many viewers, advertisements command a high price. In 2023, they will sell for a record-breaking $7 million for 30 seconds of airtime.

However, actor Brian Cox, who portrays Logan Roy on HBO's Succession, exclusively told Us Weekly that he was unaware that the game day advertisements are regarded as a significant piece of pop culture history.

Super Bowl commercial is based on Alicia Silverstone's 1995 film "Clueless."

The vibrant plaid set from "Clueless," which debuted in 1995, continues to conjure Cher Horowitz's adolescent energy almost 28 years later. The film's vivid clothing is one of its most lasting contributions, thanks to director Amy Heckerling and costume designer Mona May. Cher's name frequently comes to mind when a celebrity is seen wearing plaid.

"Clueless" was released in 1995. Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy play a group of popular high school students in the movie. Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, Jeremy Sisto and Wallace Shawn are also featured. It became well known as one of the most enduring comedies of the 1990s after becoming a box office success and receiving favorable reviews.

Despite recent attempts to produce a fresh series adaptation, "Clueless" was already adapted as a TV show in the 1990s. The project was once being worked on at Peacock. However, it has since been taken off the streamer. The intended series may still be produced at CBS Studios, according to a report from 2021, although it's unclear what the situation is right now.

The advertisement, according to the company, aims to appeal to consumers' economy as well as sentimental sides by showing how the website may assist them in saving money amid looming economic uncertainty.
