Hot Take: 5 Reasons Why Seth Rollins Is A Bad Universal Champion

You could pinpoint the moment in time when the WWE Universe was craving for a new Universal Champion, as Brock Lesnar's title reign had become staler than WWE's attempt at comedy, and everyone knew that the person who would finally dethrone Lesnar would truly have ascended to the next level in the company.

To everyone's surprise that person was none other than the man who stole the show at Wrestlemania 31. It was Seth freaking Rollins, and the entire WWE Universe was okay with Rollins replacing Lesnar as the next Universal Champion. Let's be honest, anyone would do a better job than Lesnar at that point in time.

Therefore, Rollins squashed Lesnar at Wrestlemania to capture the WWE Universal Title, and went on to revolutionise Monday Night Raw. Now, for those that read that sentence, only one half of it is true, as Rollins' reign has been mediocre at best. Today let's look at the reasons why Rollins has been a bad World Champion, and how WWE could change that.

#5 Babyface Rollins Doesn't Get The Job Done

There's no Rollins like heel Rollins

Seth Rollins is one of those wrestlers that was born to play a certain role, as we have seen the likes of John Cena, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin play both the heel/face dynamic like pros, but Rollins falls in the category that includes stars like Randy Orton, where they just can't be the same by playing against their type.

This is clearly evident when you look at both of Rollins' World Title reigns and compare them, as even his underwhelming 2015 title run was way more interesting than his bland 2019 Universal Title reign.

Rollins needs that edge, that drive, and that motivation in all of his feuds, as that what makes him a special wrestler in a sea of even more spectacular performers, but without that razor edge as a heel, Rollins lacks those qualities. Therefore, by WWE possibly turning him heel, Seth can unlock his true potential, which will allow his title reign to increase tenfold in quality.

#4 Wild Card Rollins

This doesn't make anything better

The Wild Card Rule - what can be said about this unfortunate piece of booking that has not been said by countless wrestling fans and critics? WWE has really hit rock bottom with their ideas over the last few years, but this sort of lazy strategizing has seen them break all their rules for a few weeks of higher than normal ratings.

While the company is in the pursuit of higher ratings, they don't realize the implications it can have on their biggest stars, as lack of screentime, lack of attractive booking for their champions and all round apathy from the company is slowly ruining their stars.

Last week on Raw we saw Rollins team with AJ Styles in a tag team match, and for those who didn't know, that throwaway match was stuck in the middle of the show after countless promos and arrival of Smackdown Live superstars took up the airtime. In that time WWE should have created another important pitstop for the Universal Title feud between Rollins and Styles at Money in the Bank.

The Wildcard Rule has not allowed any superstar any room to work, and with regards to Rollins, it has cut his time short to be a convincing champion, as he has to make way for even bigger stars. Now, how will that paint him as the Universal Champion?

#3 Weak To No Real Competition

This is where things are heading once again

Smackdown Live will get all the stars when they debut on FOX later in the year. That was WWE's master plan for the blue brand to make an impact on their brand's new home, and it's totally understandable, but where does that leave Raw?

You don't have to go far into the future to analyse this decision by the company, as we are already seeing the effects the blue brand's move has on Raw. The biggest stars in the company have made a move to WWE's new flagship show.

Besides AJ Styles, every other heel on the show is just not intriguing enough to create a compelling story around. This is not great news for Rollins, as it takes two to tango, which now will see Seth do the heavy lifting in potentially stale narratives against Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and even Bobby Lashley.

The Universal Title has suffered enough by being in involved in one show feuds like Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar, and now it seems like Rollins' reign isn't going to see him crafting classics.

#2 Rushed To The Top

Now what?

The worst thing about anything in life is not having a plan when undertaking an important task, and it is truly baffling how a billion dollar company like WWE can't put together a plan of action when deciding to build a brand around a specific star.

In the case of Seth Rollins, this is truly evident, as we saw Rollins pursue the Universal Title for months, as he wanted to free the WWE Universe from the disastrous reign of Brock Lesnar. Rollins did so at Wrestlemania, but what comes after that?

That is a question WWE has not been able to answer ever since Rollins become the Universal Champion, as being Monday Night Rollins or the 'beast slayer' isn't enough to brand the Architect as the next coming of Shawn Michaels or Chris Jericho.

No plans, no direction and no real motivations have let Rollins fall into the trap so many other Universal Champions fell into in the past, and he is wandering without purpose.

#1 Right Champion, Wrong Time

The champion we deserve but not right now

Let us be honest here: WWE has the best roster in the history of their company; name another period in Vince McMahon's empire when we saw a variety of superstars achieving impossible feats athleticism on a weekly basis.

While it's nice to appreciate the roster WWE has assembled, the real problem with having this much talent at your disposal is that the creative minds behind them have no real idea what to do with these superstars.

In the case of Seth Rollins, he is the absolute right champion to lead Raw into the future but he clearly does not have the backing of the creative team. Narratives, character depth, and in-ring moments that will define his reign might never be seen in his run as champion due to WWE undergoing a terrible crisis at the moment, and in that crisis, Rollins will be left as the star to take the brunt of the blame.
