5 things you need to know about the 2015 World Archery Championships

Archers from around the world will compete for top honors at the Copenhagen World Archery Championships

The 2015 edition of the World Archery Championships kicks off in Copenhagen on 26th July and goes on till 2nd August.

Top archers in the world are geared up to give their best as they begin their preparation for the Rio Olympics next year. Here are 5 things you need to know about the event:

1. This is the 48th edition of the Championships. The first World Archery Championships in Poland in 1931 saw the participation of 21 athletes. The 2015 edition will welcome 627 athletes from 95 countries, a new record.

This is the second time the Championships are being held in Copenhagen. The first time it was held was in 1950 when 132 participants competed.

2. Copenhagen is the main Olympic qualifer for the Rio 2016 games. One of the eight Olympic spots is at stake as far as team competition is concerned come Tuesday during elimination day. For nations that miss out on three spots, they will get a second chance in the individual Olympic qualifiers on Friday.

?3. Sundby Idraetspark will host the qualification rounds and Olympic qualifiers from 26 -31 July. The finals will be held in front of the Danish parliament that draws close to 60,000 people each year.

?4. Oh Jin Hyek has had a illustrious career winning everything under the sun. Hyek finished with two silver medals in the last two editions of the Worlds and will be looking to make a mence in Copenhagen with defwnding champion Seoungyun missing from the action this year.

?5. 233 athletes will compete in the recurve men’s competition. However, only 104 players will make their way to the elimination phase. This means that more people will leave the tournament than ones going through in ranking round on Monday.
