Olympics Day 5 - Archery

Deepika Kumari

The Indian team of Deepika Kumari, Laishram Bombayla Devi and Rimil Buruily won the gold medal in the women’s recurve team event at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia.

This is the first World Cup team gold for India since Shanghai 2011.

The Indian trio, who were seeded second in the tournament, defeated top-seeded and London Olympics silver-medallist Chinese team by 201-186.

The match started in the worst possible way for China with a miss, followed by few disastrous scores of 6,5,6 and 7. Indian team also started with few bad shots but because of the miss from the Chinese team in their first arrow, the Indian trio secured a healthy lead of 45-33 after one end.

Earlier, the Indian trio, who got bye in the first round, thrashed Venezuela 224-201 in the quarter-finals.

However, the men’s recurve team were beaten by Canada 220-223 in the quarters.

Meanwhile, the Indian men’s team of Rajat Chauhan, Sandeep Kumar and Ratan Singh Khuraijam clinched the bronze medal in the men’s compound team event by defeating hosts Colombia 215-210.

In the recurve mixed team event, Indian pair of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das will take on the strong Mexican pair of Aida Roman and Juan Rene Serrano for the bronze medal.
