India win compound archery gold in Asian GP

New Delhi, March 12 (IANS): The Indian men’s compound team comprising Sandeep Kumar, Abhishek Verma, Jignas Chittibomma clinched the gold medal in the Asian Archery Grand Prix in Bangkok Tuesday.

The Indian trio defeated Vietnam 226-218 in four sets (60, 53, 56, 57 versus 53, 53, 55, 57). India led Vietnam in first, third and fourth round and there was a tie in second.

They ousted Singapore 234-221 in the quarterfinal before beating Indonesia 226-212 in the last four stage.

India were also on the top in qualification round scoring 2061. Vietnam and Thailand ranking was second and third earning 2054 and 2045 points.

Sandeep Kumar’s individual rank was second behind Chinese Taipei archer Tien Chong Ngugyun while Jignas Chittibomma was fifth and Abhishek Verma eighth.

Recurve men’s team of Atanu Das, Rahul Banerjee, Binod Swansi defeated Malaysia 113- 108 in the semi finals and will meet Japan in the final Wednesday.

“It was a great team effort with each member contributing. I am hopeful that Indian contingent will win more medals in rest of the competition,” team manager Virendra Sachdeva said from Bangkok.
