Could the Indian team win any medals this time?
What's the story?
The Indian team has been announced for the 21st edition of the Asian Archery Championships. The event will be held in two stages. The first stage will be held in Bangkok whereas the second stage will be held in the Philippines between the 5th and the 12th of April. There are two divisions as far as the archery championships are concerned- recurve and compound.
In case, you didn't know
The last (20th) edition of Asia archery championships was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. While India failed to win any of the five categories (men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, women’s team and mixed team) in the recurve division, they did win two categories in the compound division. Abhishek Varma (men’s individual) and Trisha Deb, Parveena and Jyothi Surekha Vennam (women’s team) were the champions.
The heart of the matter
India’s team for the first stage (Bangkok) of the Asian Archery Championships has been announced. The contestants had to go through five grueling rounds to make it to the team. The following are the participants who have made the cut.
Men- Akash, Yashdev, Gora Ho and Gaurav
Women- Sakshi, Madhu, Promila, and Riya.
Men – Aman, Pritish, Mayank, and Gurjatinder.
Women- Muskan, Divya Dhayal, Mrinal, and Yashvi.
India finished second in the last edition with six medals whereas South Korea led the charts with 14. Of the six won by India, two were gold, three silver, and one bronze. However, only one medal (silver by Yashdev) was won by India in the recurve division.
It’s not long before the Indian contingent leaves for Bangkok to feature in the First stage of the Championships. The participants will have to make sure that they are in top gear if they are to come away with anything from the tournament.
With the team announced for the upcoming first stage of the Asian Archery Championships, all the selected members will be looking ahead to proving their mettle and justifying their inclusion in the finals. Overall, India will be looking to build on their impressive performance in the previous edition which saw them win two gold medals.
