The Archery team events at the Rio Olympics 2016 are done and dusted, with South Korea bagging gold medals in both the men’s and women’s sections. Though there was no Indian men’s team taking part, the Women’s team of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi reached the quarterfinals of their event, only to lose to Russia in a pulsating match, the result of which was decided by a tiebreak.

The individual events in Archery are starting today and the only Indian participation is that of Laxmirani Majhi, who will be up against Slovakian international Alexandra Longova, in the round of 64. Laxmirani, in the ranking round, did not perform well and finished a lowly 43rd in a group of 64 archers with a total of 614.

On the other hand, her opponent Longova, finished 22nd with a total of 640 points, as much as Deepika Kumari’s total in the Ranking Round. The 22-year-old Slovak will be a tough nut to crack for Majhi.

Laxmirani, who did not do well in the seeding round, looked a more composed figure in the knockout rounds of the Women’s team event, where against Colombia she consistently shot scores of 8 and 9. In the quarterfinal against Russia, however, the nerves and the wind got the better of her and she failed to score a 9 or 10 when it really mattered in the tie-break.

However, she would now want to leave the shortcomings of previous events behind and make a fresh start to help the Indian Archery contingent grow in confidence and come back motivated and focused in the individual rounds.
