World Archery Championships 2013: Indian challenge in the individual events ends early

India’s Deepika Kumari in action

All of the Indian archers who made it through to the latter stages of elimination from yesterday’s first two rounds, all bowed out today with neither of them making the quarter-finals.

India’s biggest hope Deepika Kumari, who had won silver at the Archery World Cup Final in Paris a few weeks ago went out in the very first round of the day to Mariana Avitia of Mexico with a 2:6 loss.

Veteran Dola Banerjee (49th) performed better, getting past the [1/16] round trouncing Lisa Unruh (17th) 6:0. Unfortunately for her, she went up against the top archer in the world in Korea’s Bo Bae Ki who humbled Dola 6:0 to stop her progress in the [1/8] stage.

A similar fate befell Tarundeep Rai in the men’s event. After beating 17th-place-qualifier Yu Xing 6:4 in the first round, the Indian faced Jin Hyek Oh of Korea, who finished first in qualifying, and is also one of the favourites for the gold. Tarundeep was beaten 0:6 by Oh.

Kapil too won his [1/16] match before getting blanked by 6th-placed-qualifier Xiaoxiang Dai in the [1/8] round. Jayanta Talukdar did not make it past the first round of the day.

The most impressive archer on the day, continuing from where he left off yesterday, was Rajat Chauhan. Rajat got the better of two higher-ranked qualifiers before eventually losing in the quarters. He got the better of Genet Dominique of France in the [1/16] round and upset Italian Pagni Sergio, who had qualified 3rd, with a narrow 137:136 win.

Rajat then went on to face another Frenchman, Deloche Pierre Julien (11th) in the [1/8] round, but this time couldn’t manage it as he lost a close encounter by just three points 126:129

2nd-placed qualifier Adam Ravenscroft accounted for Abhishek Verma in the [1/16] round 139:134.

Vennam Jyothi Surekha likewise won her first game of the day, but badly lost to Roux Gerda 118:130.
