World Archery Championships: Mangal Singh Champia advance to the last 16 stage

Indians had a mixed day in individual recurve events with women archers Laxmirani Majhi and Deepika Kumari advancing to the last 16 and only Mangal Singh Champia replicating the same among the men at the World Championships here on Wednesday.

Jayanta Talukdar and Rahul Banerjee lost their first round outings against Jay Lyon and Horacio Boardman respectively.

In the men's segment, Champia was the star performer as he clinched the first two rounds, defeating opponents Daniel Xavier Rezende of Brazil and Kazakhstan's Sanzhar Mussayev.

Against Rezende, Champia lost the first set 29-26. Then rallied back to take the second and third set 27-26, 27-24 and drew the fourth 25-25. Leading 5-3 and the contest getting tighter, Champia delivered the goods once again to take the last set 26-24.

World No.59 Champia carried forward the momentum against Mussayev to bag the contest 7-3. The Indian took all the sets except the fourth and the third which ended level. Champia, thus clinched the encounter 28-26, 27-26, 27-27, 25-28 and 29-25.

Talukdar lost the first round match against Canadian archer Jay Lyon 6-2. The scoreline read 26-27, 26-25, 26-24 and 27-26 in favour of Lyon.

Banerjee was ousted from the segment by Horacio Ernesto Boardman of Mexico, who won the game 6-0 (29-28, 28-27, 27-21).
