5 Reasons why you should go for a Marathon

If you aren’t intimidated by my last article and want to go for a marathon, go for it. It is absolutely worth the experience. A marathon has several different forms like the 5-km stretch, the 10-km stretch, the half marathon, the full marathon and if you are feeling adventurous or have a death wish, the ultra-marathon.

Marathon runners always come heavily prepared for each run as it takes a lot of training and stamina to complete one. There are marathons in every continent in the world, and yes I mean EVERY continent (including Antarctica and the Arctic).

So let’s analyze the reasons why you should go for a marathon.

1. Helps keep one fit

A marathon is definitely a must if you are a fitness freak. A full marathon would be a dream come true for the likes of celebrities like Milind Soman. It also help keep the heart pumping, improves blood circulation immensely and strengthens our muscles.

It also helps in making us prolong our stamina and endurance. As a participant for 2 years running, I can already see the marked difference in my body already.

2. Awareness runs

Another feature in marathons is the presence of a number of NGOs running to raise awareness. A number of organizations participate in an effort to raise awareness on a number of issues like medical, social, political and cultural among others.

Their efforts help raise money for charity. If a person associates with them, even if they are not an avid runner, they can do their bit to aid their NGO as best as they can.

3. It is like a fast-paced tour of the city

If a person doesn’t really get out and explore much, a marathon offers the perfect way to go on a tour of the city. One can even finish the marathon at their own pace and take in the sights and sounds around them.

The best part is, if you are in a vehicle, there is a chance that you could whiz past landmarks without getting the opportunity to slow down and take a closer look. A pleasant jog during the marathon ensures that you go at a relaxed pace and maybe en route you can scout out the nearest restaurant for when you finally cross the finish line and want to reward yourself.

4. Meet new people

Marathons not only bring local people together but also attract foreign racers as well, and in the process they can interact with each other en route and engage in friendly competition. 20-40+ kilometers provides ample time to get to know more about your fellow competitor.

It is not just foreign participants but even local participants who you may not be familiar with also prove to be excellent running partners.

5. The entire experience

Of course, running a marathon is a one in a lifetime opportunity for the average person and with all the media coverage, there is a chance of getting your 2 minutes of fame, be it an article in the newspaper or an online publication or even screen time on TV

Just being there among the competitors and feeling the buzz of excitement is enough to make it a magical experience for every Tom, Dick and Harry. But nothing can beat the exhilarating thrill of crossing that elusive finish line and on doing so allowing your legs that have been screaming in protest, some well deserved respite
