Clayton Young is an American long-distance runner who was born on September 14, 1993. Young joined a mileage club and started running distance during his elementary school years in Yakima, Washington. He competed in the competitive cross-country program at American Fork High School after his family shifted to Utah. He qualified for the all-state track team 10 times and the cross-country team three times.


Young competed in cross-country running for three Utah state championship teams. He joined Brigham Young University in collegiate track and field, where he won the 10,000 meters in the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He is among the many athletes trained by Ed Eyestone and his team.


In the 2023 Chicago Marathon, he finished sixth in a time that was a personal best of 2:08:00. The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Young as the National Athlete of the Week on October 8, 2018. Having placed second in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Young earned a spot in the Paris Olympics.

Freshman (2015)

In a standout debut season, Clayton Young has some notable achievements which include his stellar 4-mile run at the BYU Autumn Classic where he finished 4th clocking in at 20:03.5, and a formidable 8000-meter run finishing 5th at the WCC Preview in 24:27.5. In an 8000-meter run, at the Washington Invitational, Young finished 30th clocking in at 23:52.5, and at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational finished 145th in 24:43.6. He also competed at the WCC Championships in 8000 meters and finished 26th. However, his crowning achievement came at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships where he conquered the 10k course in 32:30.9 finishing 68th.


Sophomore (2016)

During his Sophomore year, Clayton Young made some noteworthy achievements, including his second place in 4 miles at the BYU Autumn Classic. In the 8000 meters, He earned fifth place at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational in 23:55.8, at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational, he secured 94th place clocking in at 24:58.6, and at the WCC Championships, he finished 7th in 24:42.2. He finished 23rd at the Mountain Region Championships clocking a time of 31:21.70 and secured 77th place at the NCAA Championships in 30:43.9 both in the 10k meter run.


Junior (2017)

In the Junior Year, Clayton Young earned 3rd place at the BYU Autumn Classic clocking a time of 19:28.2 in the 4 miles. In the 8000-meter run, He secured 1st place at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in 23:42.4, finished 12th at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in 23:25.0, and was placed 5th at the WCC Championships clocking a time of 23:29.1. His impressive run at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships and NCAA National Championships secured him the 27th place in 31:03.3 and 105th place in 30:47.36 respectively.


Senior (2018)

In his final year, Clayton Young's senior campaign was marked by impressive victories which include a commanding win at the Steve T. Reeder 7k meter where he crossed the finish line in 21:04.6. His exceptional performance at the NCAA National Championships secured 72nd place in the 10k race with a time of 30:25.2. Securing the 12th place at the Pre-Nationals Invitational (White Race) in the 8k meter run in a time of 24:03.7 and finishing 11th at the West Coast Conference Championships in the 8k meter run within 24:05.9.
