Durgesh Kumar Wins Silver in 400m Hurdles In YOG

16 year old Indian athlete Durgesh Kumar won silver in the boys’ 400m hurdles in the Youth Olympic Games 2010.

Durgesh, who created national record in the seventh national youth(under-18) athletics championship with a finish in

51.57 seconds, finished with career best timing of 50.81 seconds but that was not enough to win a gold as Cuban Norge Sotomayor Lara finished ahead of him with a timing of 50.69 seconds. Durgesh was the fastest in the heat 2 held on thursday where he had a timing of 52.20 seconds. The Gujarat lad is the sixth person to win a medal in the inaugural youth olympics games being held in Singapore.

Ruchi Singh could not get in touch of a podium finish as she finished sixth in the final of junior women’s 10 m air pistol with a score of 467.2 Korean Jang Mi Kim won the gold with 479.2. Ruchi had an identical finish in the qualifying round of the event. Boys’ basketball team lost their match against hosts Singapore by a 31-20 in their last match.

India now have 5 silvers and 1 bronze in the competition.
