Kolkata - Former Asiad gold medalist sprinter and ex-Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) lawmaker Jyotirmoyee Sikdar filed a defamation suit against a vernacular daily after it mentioned her husband Avtar Singh’s name in an alleged scam.

“The newspaper in its report has maliciously dragged Singh’s name in a scam which has maligned his and his family’s reputation. We have therefore filed a suit for defamation against the Bengali daily,” Sikdar’s counsel Sayan Dey said.

The former athlete is also mulling filing more such suits against some TV news channels and newspapers.

“Today, we have filed one case. On Monday, we will be filing more such cases against some TV news channels and newspapers,” Sikdar told IANS.

Singh’s name cropped up after West Bengal Sports Minister Madan Mitra alleged that gold medal winning athlete Pinki Pramanik was involved in a land scam as she had illegally sold a plot leased to her by the state government free of cost.

As per the minister’s allegation, Pinki sold the three-cottah plot in the south eastern part of the city to Singh who in turn, sold it to a promoter.

Both Singh and Sikdar have denied being involved in any deal concerning the plot.
