
Leonard Essau Korir is a professional American long-distance runner, specializing in 10000m, half-marathon and marathon events. Born on December 10, 1986, he grew up in Iten, Kenya, and studied at Tambach Teacher Training College, where he met coach Colm O’Connell. Colm O’Connell, impressed by his running ability, offered him a scholarship to Iona College in New York. In the final year, Korir attended the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships in Iona and was one the finalists.
After college, Leonard Korir concentrated on road running. In 2012, he was runner-up at the Healthy Kidney 10K. In 2013, he made his half marathon debut for fourth with 61:19 minutes timing at the New York City Half Marathon. As Korir lived and had a scholarship in the U.S., he decided to give back and joined the Army. He secured third place at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials and came 14th in the 10000m event in 2016 Rio Olympics. Leonard also achieved third place at the 2024 United States Olympic Marathon Trials and will represent the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Korir further plans to be a coach to mentor runners in the World Class Athlete Program.
