Indian athletes bagged one gold and one bronze medal on the third day of the Games, which are being held in Nanjing,China. A total of 90 Indian players are participating in this international multi-sporting event which is held every four years for athletes aged between 14-17 years of age.

The best news of the day came from squash, where India’s Kush Kumar won the gold medal in the men’s singles event. Kush Kumar defeated Malaysian star player Mohammad Syafiq Mohd. Kamal 11-9 5-11 11-9 11-7 in a grueling final match that lasted for 57 minutes.

Although Kush won the gold medal for the country, neither the Indian flag was raised nor the National Anthem was played because Indian players are not competing under the tri-colour in this multi-sporting event because Indian Olympic Association is still under suspension.

Instead, they are participating in these games as independent athletes under the banner of the Olympic Council of Asia which directly means that if any Indian player wins the gold medal in these Games, neither the Indian flag will be raised nor the Indian National Anthem be played at the venue.

The other good news of the day came from table tennis where young Indian paddler Abhishek Yadav won the bronze medal after going down 4-11 13-11 13-11 4-11 8-11 5-11 to Fan Zhendong of China in the semifinal.

In weightlifting, India’s Sambo Lapung finished 4th in Men’s 69kg with a total lift of 269kg. Wei Yinting of China took gold with a total lift of 277kg. In women’s 58kg category, Chanu Thasana finished 5th with a total lift of 169kg. China won the gold and silver whereas bronze medal was won by Kazakhstan.

In shooting, Virbhadra Vijay Salokhe finished 11th and Pratik Borse finished 15th in Men’s 10m Air Rifle qualification round and thus failed to qualify for the finals. In men’s skeet event, Anantjeet Singh Naruka finished 7th and Hamza Sheikh finished 9th in the qualification round.

In swimming, Supriya Mondal finished 6th with a timing of 2:06.24 in boys’ 200m Butterfly final. In girls’ 50m Breaststroke semifinal, India’s AV Jayaveena finished last with a timing of 36.90 s.

In judo, India’s Vinay Kumar lost to Htone Lain of Myanmar in the pre-quarterfinals of Boys 81kg event whereas Mitlesh lost to Tursunpashsha Nurmetova of Uzbekistan in Girls’ 63kg event.

There was huge disappointment in the athletics field as 18 Indian athletes were disqualified because they were found to be overage. The event necessitated that all participating athletes be under the age of 16 i.e they should be born on or after 1997 , but that was not the case with most members of the Indian contingent.

The Indian team with a total of 4 medals (1 gold and 3 bronze) are currently on 12th position. China with a total of 34 medals (17 gold 10 silver and 7 bronze) are on the top of the chart followed by South Korea and North Korea.
