On the opening day of competition at the 2013 World Athletics Championships, Olympic champion Mo Farah of Britain won the gold medal in the men’s 10-thousand metres.

Saturday’s only other gold went to Edna Kiplagat in the women’s marathon.

Usain Bolt

ran his first race at this year’s world championships, easily qualifying for Sunday’s semi-finals of the 100-metres.

The two-time Olympic champion in the event is trying to regain the world title he surrendered two years ago in South Korea, when he false-started in the final and was disqualified.

Bolt won his heat on Saturday in 10.07 seconds, leading the entire way and cruising across the line.

Olympic champion Mo Farah of Great Britain won the gold medal in the men’s 10-thousand metres.

Farah held off defending champion Ibrahim Jeilan of Ethiopia in a thrilling finish to win in a season’s best 27 minutes 21.71 seconds.

Kenyan Edna Kiplagat defied hot and humid conditions and a brave front-running display from Italian Valeria Straneo to become the first woman to retain the world marathon title.

33-year-old Kiplagat won the first gold of the championships after timing her race to perfection, taking control in the shadows of the Luzhniki stadium to win in 2 hours 25 minutes and 44 seconds.
