Madrid, May 9 (IANS): Former Spanish athlete Yago Lamela was found dead at his home in northern Spain.

The 36-year-old long jumper won the 1999 World Championship silver in Seville and then won at the 2003 World Championship in Paris, reports Xinhua.

Lamela also won a string of indoor medals, including a 1999 Indoor World Championships silver in Maebashi and another 2003 Indoor World silver in Birmingham, along with a 2002 European Indoor Championship silver. His jump of 8.56 metres in Maebashi was the European Indoor record for 10 years before it was finally broken by Sebastian Bayer.

However, after those successes, Lamela began to suffer a series of injuries in his Achilles tendon. These problems stopped him competing at the 2004 Athens Olympics and forced his eventual retirement in 2009.

Lamala suffered from bouts of depression and was hospitalised as a result of psychiatric problems.
