Kansas State guard Markquis Nowell lays it in against Michigan State in the Sweet 16.

They say it is not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. This saying seems to have been made for Kansas State guard Markquis Nowell.

Standing just 5-foot-8 and weighing 175 pounds, Nowell is constantly among the shortest players on the floor. Yet he remains one of the most impactful on a night-to-night basis.

On the season, the New York native has averaged 17.1 points, 7.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. He stepped onto center stage during the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night, leading Kansas State to the Elite Eight after taking down Michigan State 98-93 in overtime in the Sweet 16.

Nowell began his college career at the University of Arkansas Little Rock, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference. In the three seasons at UALR, he averaged 14.3 ppg, 4.9 apg, 3.3 rpg and 2.0 apg. He transferred to Kansas State, where he has spent the past two seasons and further flourished in his development.

He has fully put the pieces together this season and emerged as the leader of Kansas State. He has a terrific relationship with coach Jerome Tang as the two have a much more conversational discussion on plays compared to most players. This has been seen throughout the season, and it has brought out the best in both.

Nowell's effort leads Kansas State to Elite Eight

While he has been great all season, no performance was as impressive as Nowell's Sweet 16 production. The 23-year-old ended with 20 points, an NCAA Tournament record 19 assists, five steals and three rebounds. Kansas State needed each of those 19 assists to get the win.

Nowell was artful in his ability to attack the basket and make the call for when to create for himself and when to play make for others. He provided a calming influence and did not shy away from launching a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc throughout the matchup.

It was even more impressive considering Nowell had to be carried off the court after rolling his ankle early in the second half. It looked as if his night was over until he made his return and seemingly did not miss a beat.

The game was won after Nowell produced a game-winning steal and then a layup down the other end as the clock expired.

The victory advanced Kansas State (26-9), seeded third in the East, to the Elite Eight, where they will face either No. 4 seed Tennessee (25-10) or No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic (33-3) on Saturday.
