NCAA Results Roundup: Arizona crashes out as UCLA, Duke, Houston progress to the second round

The first full day of the 2023 NCAA Tournament has wrapped up with the conclusion of 16 first-round games. As always, there were routine wins, shocking results and stellar performances from players who weren't necessarily in the limelight entering the tournament.

We take a look at some of the most prominent headlines following Thursday's March Madness action.

NCAA top seeds Arizona and Virginia crash out of round one

No. 2 seed Arizona and No. 4 seed Virginia have crashed out of the 2023 NCAA Tournament in the first round. Both teams were knocked out by double-digit seeds. Arizona lost to 15-seed Princeton by a 59-55 margin. It was the 11th time that a No. 15 team caused an upset a No. 2 seed in tournament history. It's the third consecutive time a No. 15 seed has knocked out a No. 2 seed.

Tosan Evbuomwan led Princeton's charge with 15 points, while Azuolas Tubelis had 22 points for Arizona. Princeton earned a gritty win, gaining an 11-2 advantage on second-chance points. That allowed the Tigers to erase a 12-point deficit (47-35) in the final 12 minutes.

Meanwhile, Virginia lost 68-67 to 13-seed Furman earlier in the day. The game saw a wild ending, with JP Pegues knocking down a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to seal the win for Furman. Virginia's Kihei Clark launched a mid-court pass after getting trapped, which a Furman defender intercepted before passing it to Pegues for the game-winning 3-pointer.

Houston, Alabama, UCLA and other top seeds progress to the second round of NCAA 2023

Houston, Alabama, UCLA and other top teams picked up expected wins on Thursday. Houston defeated Northern Kentucky 63-52. Three players scored in double-digits, with Jarace Walker leading the way with 16 points. Houston survived despite All-American Marcus Sasser aggravating a groin injury in the first half and not returning.

Houston only led by three points at halftime, and the game was tied at 36-36 early in the second half. However, the Cougars eventually pulled away, brushing aside their chances of a major first-round upset.

Meanwhile, Alamaba beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a crushing 96-75 margin behind a clinical shooting effort from deep as they knocked down 15 of 33 shots from 3-point range. Nick Pringle led the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Marc Sears had 15 points.

UCLA blew out UNC Asheville 86-53. The Bruins took control early on, scoring the first 14 points of the contest, and didn't look back. Amari Bailey and Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 17 each for the No. 2 seed Bruins.

No. 5 seed Duke handled business against Oral Roberts with a 74-51 win behind Jeremy Roach's career-high 23-point effort.
