Randolph Childress on rough night for Florida A&M Rattlers facing Purdue's Zach Edey: “They should have called child protection services”

Zach Edey and the undefeated, top-ranked Purdue Boilermakers continue to be an unstoppable force in college basketball. The Florida A&M Rattlers experienced just how tough Edey and Purdue can be as Purdue rolled 82-49 on Thursday night.

Throughout the season, junior big man Zach Edey has been a dominant player, averaging 21.9 points, 13.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. He's also shooting 63.4% from the field and an impressive 72.6% from the free-throw line. The 7-foot-4 big man has been one of the top players in the country.

But Edey has also been efficient and tough to defend due to his physical frame. On "The Field of 68," former Wake Forest star Randolph Childress joked that FAMU should have called "child protection services" after having to deal with Edey.

"They should have called children protection services with what he was doing to them, and he only had five shots," Childress said.

Zach Edey continues to be a force for the Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers junior Zach Edey hasn't needed a high number of field-goal attempts to take over a game. That's just what he demonstrated during Thursday's game against outmanned Florida A&M, a Southwestern Athletic Conference team.

Despite only finishing with five shots in 22 minutes, Edey, a preseason All-Big Ten selection, finished with a double-double: 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Teams have done everything in their power to stop the 7-foot-4, 285-pound big man. Due to Edey's skill and overpowering strength, he's often manhandled any opposition.

Purdue (13-0, 2-0 Big Ten) has skyrocketed up the ranks in college basketball. After only receiving votes in the Associated Press preseason poll, the Boilermakers are now the country's No. 1-ranked team. Purdue went 29-8, finished third in the Big Ten and reached the Sweet 16 (losing 67-64 to Saint Peter's Cinderella run) last season, the Boilermakers' deepest run since 2017.

Purdue scored dominating wins over two ranked teams in November, taking down then-No. 6 Gonzaga 84-66 and then-No. 8 Duke 75-56. And the Boilermakers have a chance to keep their momentum going. Purdue won't face another ranked team until taking on No. 16 Indiana (10-3, 1-1) on Feb. 4 and 25 and No. 15 Wisconsin on March 6.

If any team wants to take down Purdue, it's going to have to start with slowing down Edey. In his last five games, Edey has averaged 21.6 ppg, 16.6 rpg and 2.2 bpg.
