Mikkel Kessler becomes WBC (World Boxing Council) champion in the Super- Middleweight category

Mikkel Kessler of Denmark displaced the Carl Froch of Britain from his World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight title on Saturday in MCH, Messecenter, Herning. Froch, who was undefeated in 26 fights before this, was not able to show his prowess in this match.

The 31-year-old Kessler, who has won 43 fights in 45, was cheered by his home crowds and was unanimously declared World Champion by the judges. Kessler reclaimed his title after five months after he was stunned by Andre Ward last year in the World Boxing Association (WBA) championship title. It is his first win in this tournament.

The bout which was part of Super Six Tournament saw Kessler scoring 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113 in the 12 round bouts. The Dane who was injured in the left eye never let his opponent Froch gain confidence in the match.

In the early rounds of the match, Kessler took control of Froch by using his jabs and hooks but was given a tough fight in the third round. Kessler who got a slip in the third round avoided Froch’s punches and was declared winner in the ninth round.

The Super Six Tournament is the tournament in which six of the best 168- pounds boxers are invited to play a series of three fights each. They are awarded points as per the result of the match and four fighters who win the most points play in the seeded semifinals and they go on to play for the championship next year.
