Magnus Carlsen crowned World Champion after draw in Game 10 of World Chess Championship

After a thrilling encounter that lasted nearly five hours, Magnus Carlsen has been crowned the new Chess World Champion, with Game 10 of the World Chess Championship 2013 ending in a draw. The draw enabled Carlsen to take an unassailable 6.5-3.5 lead over defending champion Viswanathan Anand, thus handing the Norwegian his first world championship title.

Despite Carlsen having an almost impregnable lead going into the game, Anand refused to cede any ground to the challenger. A series of unpredictable moves led to a knight endgame, which is considered to be Anand’s strong suit. However, Carlsen had the pawn advantage over the Indian, and kept pushing for a win despite needing only a draw to cement his title chances. Ultimately, after both players got their queens back on the board and engaged in a flurry of quickfire moves, a stalemate was agreed upon, thus ending Anand’s reign at the top of the sport.
