Senior guard Haley Cavinder led a late-game surge, helping the Miami Hurricanes stay undefeated with a 79-63 win over the Charlotte 49ers on Friday at Watsco Center.
Cavinder finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists, narrowly missing a double-double. Despite six turnovers, three fouls and an 0-for-7 performance from beyond the arc in 34 minutes, the 5-foot-6 guard played a crucial role in Miami’s victory.
After the game, coach Tricia Cullop praised Haley Cavinder and Michigan transfer Cameron Williams. Williams led with 22 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block, shooting 9-of-11.
“I can’t speak enough about how well these two played,” Cullop said. ... “These two were amazing playing together. When things got tight, they kept their composure and kept everybody focused.”
Cullop also highlighted Cavinder as one of the best rebounding guards she has ever coached.
Cavinder struggled early in the game, starting the first quarter with four turnovers, a foul and two missed shots, although she managed four points and two rebounds. However, she found her rhythm as the game progressed, scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds in the second quarter on 3-of-6 shooting.
She added six points and two rebounds in the third quarter and finished with two points, two rebounds and three assists in the fourth.
This season, Cavinder is averaging 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals, with shooting splits of 44.8% from the field and 72.2% from the free-throw line.
