South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley is running Little Gamecock Day Camp this year. The camp started on Monday and wraps up on Wednesday. It is a basketball fundamental camp that is aimed at first to fifth grade boys and girls. The camp tries to teach them the necessary foundational skills for becoming good basketball players.
On the morning of day three, Dawn Staley, who is worth $12 million, posted on Instagram about the young hoopers showing up with A'One Day, named after former South Carolina star A'ja Wilson.
"Little Gamecock Camp day 3..... IT'S A'ja Wilson A’One Day! Our campers showed up and out in their A’Ones and I’m here for it all! Keep inspiring our youth A! Love!"
A'ja Wilson was a star for the South Carolina Gamecocks from 2014 to 2018. In that time, she steadily established herself as a star. She helped Dawn Staley win her first national championship in 2017. She then went on to become the first pick in the 2018 WNBA draft by the Las Vegas Aces.
Wilson has become one of the best players in the WNBA, winning the WNBA championship in both 2022 and 2023. In 2024, Wilson set a WNBA record for the highest ppg in a season with 26.9.
Dawn Staley comments on Caitlin Clark's ceiling as a player
Dawn Staley has been the coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks since 2008. As a result, she has had the opportunity to coach many great players, including A'ja Wilson. She is widely viewed as one of the best coaches in women's college basketball and does a great job of helping players reach their potential.
So, when Staley speaks about things in basketball, most people listen to what she has to say. A big topic of conversation early in the 2025 WNBA season has been about Indiana's Caitlin Clark. The Fever star is having a great start to her sophomore season and is in MVP talks. On Thursday, Staley spoke with Sports Illustrated about what Clark's ceiling is in basketball.
"Caitlin will go down as probably one of the best players to ever grace the league. And she's going to probably do it in half of the time that it takes any other great player," Staley said.
"When you're able to shoot the ball as well as she does, I think her passing ability, her court vision is second to none. Her ability to deliver the basketball makes her a triple threat.... She's a big guard."
While Clark had a strong start to her season, she has missed the past five games with a quad strain.
