Charles Barkley bashes NCAA president

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has never been afraid to voice his opinion, and his latest target is NCAA President Charlie Baker. His issue with Baker stems from his plans with the advancement of NIL deals.

Last year, the NCAA came to terms on a deal that allows athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness. In the past, college athletes were not paid. Now, countless players have been able to sign sponsorship deals.

During a recent interview, Charlie Baker said he wants to meet with members of congress in regards to NIL deals. After hearing about possible government involvement, Charles Barkley voiced his displeasure with the idea:

“Our politicians are awful people. … I would actually go to people who actually care about basketball. I would put a committee together, I would love for Clark to be on the committee. Get some coaches, get some players and let’s try to work this thing out.
“We can’t ask these politicians nothing. Those people are awful people — Democrats and Republicans. They’re all crooks.”

Baker stated that his main reason to meet with government is that he wants to create uniformity when it comes to athletes signing NIL deals.

Is Charles Barkley right to bash NCAA President for NIL plans?

His opinion on asking congress for help regarding NIL deals might be harsh, but Charles Barkley brings up an interesting counterargument. Instead of asking the government for help, the NCAA should try to figure this out themselves.

As Barkley said, a commitee should be made with college coaches, players and officials to work out the progression of NIL deals. This would likely result in a proper plan being put in place to continue the success of NIL.

Over the years, there have been countless college athletes who have gone on to the NBA and other pro sports leagues. With that in mind, there are countless people with experience working with these kinds of deals. This should mean a proper group could be put together to discuss the future of NILs in college athletics.

NIL deals have a chance to breathe new life into college sports. With the opportunity to make money, it might result in athletes waiting longer to go to the pros. This could mean college basketball has a chance to gain the popularity it had in the decades prior.

Before turning to government help, Baker and the NCAA should consider Barkley's idea.
