Alex Karaban leads a balanced Husky offense to start the year
Alex Karaban is handling the expectations of being an important scorer in UConn's offense well to start the season.
Five games into the campaign, Karaban is averaging 16.8 points, 4.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks on 58.7% shooting, including 53.1% from beyond the arc. Against Memphis on Monday, he recorded 19 points, six assists and four rebounds on 6 of 13 shooting, including 4 of 8 from downtown in 43 minutes.
He has been a full-time starter for the last two seasons, having helped the Huskies win consecutive national championships. He averaged 11.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and 1.6 apg in 78 appearances.
Karaban's increased responsibilities have allowed him to be more active not only in scoring but in playmaking as well. This has helped UConn average 90.4 ppg on 52.2% shooting and 37.7% from deep while dishing out 21.8 assists.
Three other players have been helping Karaban elevate the offense. Tarris Reed Jr. is putting up a double-double of 13.8 ppg and 10.0 rpg, Solo Ball with 12.8 ppg on 48% 3-point shooting, while Liam McNeeley is averaging 12.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg as a freshman.
Whether they win or lose, Alex Karaban and UConn will face either Iowa State or Dayton on Wednesday to close out its time at the Maui Invitational.
