Kentucky Wildcats coach Mark Pope is in the offseason after replacing outgoing legendary Kentucky coach John Calipari, who now coaches for the Arkansas Razorbacks, last season.
In a video posted by @ksr_ig on Instagram on Friday, Pope sent a message to hoopers aspiring to play for a storied program like Kentucky about the mindset required to make the team.
"There's nowhere like this, and if you come in here not understanding or appreciating that, I actually think your chances of success are not very high to some level. Nobody can really understand it unless they live it. But, the guys that are really successful here come in with a healthy respect for what this is because it requires more ability to be, you know, non-distracted," Pope explained.
"It requires more of a giving heart, it requires more of an idea that there's something more bigger than yourself, it requires more of an ability to sacrifice a little bit. So, understanding having some concept of what Kentucky basketball means is a vital part from the very first phone call to the very last pre-commitment conversation," he concluded.
In his first year at the helm of the Wildcats, Mark Pope spearheaded Kentucky to an overall record of 24-12, 10-8 in SEC play, having not won the national title since 2012.
Mark Pope asserts that his Kentucky Wildcats coaching staff will be "100 times" better next season
In another video posted by @ksr_ig on Instagram, Mark Pope shared that besides his players improving drastically for the 2025-26 season amid a slew of recruitments moves in the offseason, the Kentucky Wildcats' coaching staff has been working to get better as well.
"I talk about our players being better this second year. Our staff is going to be a hundred times better than we were last year just because we had a chance to function together and learn each other, and the guys have had a chance to learn me. We're excited to see how much better we can be in year two," Pope said.
"How much more efficiently, smartly and intelligently we can do things, how much higher we can raise the standard that we hold ourselves accountable to as a staff and our players, how relentless we can be in doing that. I think year two is fun because you have year one under your belt," he added.
Mark Pope and the Wildcats will be entering next season fresh off of their 2025 NCAA national tournament berth, where they lost 78-65 in the Sweet 16 to longtime rivals Tennessee Volunteers.
