Texas star Tre Johnson has reportedly received an invite to the 2025 NBA Draft green room, as per ESPN. The green room is where players sit with their family and agents, waiting for their names to be called by the commissioner, and it is usually reserved for the biggest names in the draft.
Some of the other names joining him include top prospect Cooper Flagg, Derik Queen, VJ Edgecombe, Dylan Harper, Ace Bailey, Khaman Maluach, Jeremiah Fears, Kon Knueppel, Kasparas Jakucionis, Egor Demin, Carter Bryant, and Asa Newell.
Johnson earned this recognition due to his college run, as he made plenty of noise in his one season at Texas. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, shooting 42.7% from the field and 37% from three. His scoring ability and confidence on the ball made him one of Texas’ go-to guys all year long, and he helped the Longhorns reach the NCAA Tournament.
Despite Texas failing to go beyond the First Four, Johnson's individual performances kept him in the spotlight. He earned some individual recognition, winning the SEC Freshman of the Year award and getting selected to the Second-Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Team.
Tre Johnson officially declared for the NBA Draft back in April, which did not surprise anyone. Most experts have had him locked in as a lottery pick for months now, and some mock drafts have him going inside the top 10, while others think he could go just outside that range. Either way, he is expected to hear his name early on June 25 when the draft gets going at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Tre Johnson projected to join elite company in Texas NBA draft history
Greg Brown, Kai Jones and Jericho Sims were the last players from Texas to be selected in the NBA draft, and that was four years ago in 2021. However, that is about to change with Tre Johnson, though he could raise the bar even further.
Only four Longhorns, Kevin Durant, Tristan Thompson, LaSalle Thompson and LaMarcus Aldridge, have been top-five picks in draft history. With many experts projecting Johnson to be among the first five names selected, he might be joining the exclusive club.
