Things are going from bad to worse for Dan Hurley and UConn. The Huskies lost their second straight game at the Maui Invitational, absorbing a 73-72 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Buffaloes on Tuesday.
The Huskies suffered another late-game collapse, following their 99-97 loss to the Memphis Tigers. UConn went scoreless in the final 1:31 against the Buffaloes. In the closing seconds of the game, Hurley charged onto the court, furious over a no-call on an over-the-back foul involving Huskies forward Liam McNeeley.
The UConn coach attempted to confront the referees directly but was held back by his assistant coaches. College hoops fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Hurley and his antics after his team lost back-to-back games for the first time since January 2023.
Below are some of the reactions:
"What's Hurley going to whine about in this game?"
"DAN HURLEY DEMISE TELEVISED. Hurley going back to back crash outs after another UConn loss... INJECT IT IN MY VEINS!!!"
"Anyone else getting really really tired of Dan Hurley?"
Here are some other tweets:
"Dan Hurley has gotta chill out. I get it you’re passionate. You love the game but it’s hurting your squad," one fan chimed in.
"Hurley is the biggest sore loser in sports. His sense of entitlement is nauseating," another fan said.
"Dan Hurley should’ve left for the NBA when he had the chance.. He’s falling apart right now," one fan tweeted.
"Hurley really acts out way too much, coaches need to be an example of behavior. He is not," another user wrote.
Dan Hurley takes center stage again with flare-up in loss to Colorado
Hurley had to be restrained by his assistant coaches during the final moments of UConn's game against Colorado.
He was furious after a no-call involving star player Liam McNeeley with 24 seconds remaining. Referees did not blow the whistle after Colorado’s Trevor Baskin grabbed an offensive rebound over the back of McNeeley.
That extra possession proved critical, as Andrej Jakimovski scored the game-winning layup for the Buffaloes following a timeout.
Hurley also grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons on Monday when his technical foul cost the Huskies in their game against Memphis.
He berated officials after McNeeley was called for an over-the-back foul with the game tied at 92. The foul, combined with Hurley’s technical, shifted momentum as PJ Carter sank all four free throws to give Memphis the lead for good.
