The first round of the Maui Invitational concluded on Monday as four of the eight teams advanced to the winner's bracket. However, those four winners do not feature head coach Dan Hurley and the two-time defending champions UConn Huskies.
No. 2 UConn suffered a close defeat to the Memphis Tigers to begin the tournament, having trailed by 13 near the end of regulation before making a 20-7 rally to force overtime. The period saw few points scored, but Memphis did enough to get past the Huskies.
While the loss eliminates the Huskies from having a chance to be in the championship game of the tournament, it doesn't mean that they exit from the tournament entirely.
Here is where Dan Hurley and UConn stand in the current round of the Maui Invitational and what is left on the tournament schedule.
Dan Hurley, UConn's current trajectory in the Maui Invitational
With the loss to Memphis, Dan Hurley and UConn moved to the loser's bracket of the tournament. The highest they can finish is fifth place if they win their next two games. A loss in the second round would instead send them to the seventh-place contest.
UConn will need strong performances from their scorers. They have four players who average at least 12.8 points per game. Alex Karaban leads the way with 16.8 points, and his impact on the game will be critical to the Huskies' rebound from Monday's loss.
Their next matchup is against the Colorado Buffaloes with tip-off set for 3:30 p.m. ET. Colorado is coming off a 72-56 loss to Michigan State in the first round. One of their finest players is Elijah Malone, who scores 14.0 points per game. He leads the club in blocks with 1.6 and ranks second in rebounding with 5.6 per game.
